Edouard Toudouze (French artist, 1848-1907)

Edouard Toudouze was the son of the artists Auguste Gabriel Toudouze and Adèle Anaïs Colin. The whole family was artistic. His uncle Jean Marie Émile Toudouze, his cousin Simon Alexandre Toudouze, his sister Isabelle Toudouze, and his wife Marie Anne were all notable artists. Édouard Toudouze studied under Isidore Pils, Monticelli, and Auguste Leloir (who was another of his uncles). He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1871. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1867, and also at the Salon des Artistes Français. As a painter, Édouard Toudouze remained faithful to the academic classicism of the Salon. His most interesting work today is his decorative schemes at the Opéra-Comique de Paris, the Sorbonne, and the Grand-Salle du Palais de Justice de Rennes, where he designed 10 large tapestries on the theme of the history of Brittany.
