William Henry Barribal (American artist, 1873 - 1956)


William was a London artist who began his career as a lithographer before going on to study at the Paris Academy Julien. Barribal was commissioned by Schweppes to do advertising posters, In 1928 Barribal was contracted to the Waddingtons card company we his work was transformed into several series of backs on playing cards, he was also well known for his art deco style posters he produced for the London North Eastern Railway in the 1920s-1930s Barribal worked for various magazines of the day Vogue was one of many, and between 1919 and 1938 regularly exhibited his work. His images of exquisite and fashionable Edwardian women have become classics and the work of many a modern fashion artist shows traces of the unmistakable "Barribal style" 1910s-1930s postcard publishers M. Munk and Bruder Kohn of Vienna, London's Inter-Art Publishing Co., Valentine's and A.Vivian & Co. took pride in issuing postcards that featured Barribal's Art Deco images of beautiful women
