Maurice Leloir (1851-1940) - French Painter and Illustrator

Maurice Leloir (1851-1940)

Maurice Leloir's very successful career was based not only on his watercolours and illustrations such as those he did for Guy de Maupassant's Bel Ami, Alexandre Dumas' Les Trois Mousquetaires but also upon his vast knowledge of costumes. This specialty served him well in the sets he designed for the plays of Sarah Bernardt, André Antoine and Firmin Gémier. During his lifetime he was the founder of the Société de l'Histoire du Costume which is still active in Paris today. It was his donation of costumes made in 1920 to the city of Paris which formed the basis of the Musée Municipal du Costume, today the Musée Galliera. At the time of Leloir's death at the age of 86, he was just completing his Dictionnaire du costume, which remains an essential reference for the history of costume to this day. From 1890 to 1940, Leloir was the leading expert on French costume, especially dating from the 18th century. The present watercolours and drawings demonstrate the artist's wit and theatrical flair.

Oscar Arthur Bluhm

Oscar Arthur Bluhm (German, 1867-1912)

Oscar Bluhm was born in 1867 in Meissen outside of Leipzig. As is the case with many of the Eastern German artists of this period, there is little known about his personal life or formal training. Ostensibly, he would have been a member of the Berlin School, which was the hub of the region's artistic community.

Philippe Noyer (French, 1917-1985)

Philippe Noyer (French, 1917-1985) Philippe Noyer was born June 28, 1917 in Lyon (central France). After a traditional course of study at the elite Ecole des Roches, Noyer enrolled in the Beaux Arts (Fine Arts) School of Lyon, before going to Paris to study at the Paul Colin School of Art and experience the whirlwinds of Surrealism first hand on Paris' Left Bank. Philippe Noyer started his painting career in 1943. That same year he met the famous Paris art dealer, Emmanuel David, who promoted world-known "School of Paris" painters from 1943 - 1950.

David immediately put Noyer on contract with the prestigious DROUANT-DAVID Gallery of Paris. Parallel to his paintings, which at the time, represented owls wrapped in leaves and round-faced urchins with their pet animals, Philippe Noyer soon became one of the most sought after portraitist of Paris and London high society. The Gallery gave him his first one-man show in 1947, which immediately crowned him with instant success. Life was good. While he was with the DROUANT-DAVID Gallery, Philippe Noyer says his stroke of luck for his success in the United States can be attributed to Mr. Robert Goldstein, the former President of the 20th Century Fox movie company. It was in 1949.
